Latest desktop synthesizer revealed

Roland SH-4d desktop synthesizer SH-101 Juno-106 vintage-inspired sounds

Roland have announced the upcoming launch of the SH-4d, a new desktop synthesizer equipped with 11 oscillator types that promise to deliver a range of classic and modern sounds, a multi-timbral sequencer, and an extensive collection of on-board effects.

Oscillators

A diverse range of oscillator models are included, with classic tones from Roland’s past offered by SH-101 and Juno-106 options, along with a PCM mode loaded with a large selection of sample-based sounds. More vintage analogue-inspired patches can be crafted thanks to the inclusion of SH-3D, Chord, Ring, and Sync models, whilst a range of modern digital sounds are available courtesy of Cross FM, Wavetable, and Drawing models. The instrument also feature a flexible drum synthesizer packed with tone-shaping capabilities that allow users to create their own custom kit sounds from scratch.

Control

Plenty of hands-on control is provided by the instrument’s front panel, with a total of 32 knobs, four sliders, and a collection of multi-function buttons providing instant access key parameters. Dedicated control sections are present for the synthesizer’s filter, amp, and LFO parameters, and the on-board LCD display, sliders, and buttons automatically reconfigure their functions to follow the selected mode in an effort to avoid ‘menu-diving’. A D-Motion mode is also available, which utilises motions sensors to provide X/Y control over a pair of parameters based on the player’s physical movement.

Sequencer & Effects

A powerful on-board multi-timbral sequencer allows users to piece together everything from compact loops to extended compositions directly on the device itself, with four synth parts and a customisable rhythm part able to run simultaneously. Roland say that the instrument is capable of offering up to 60 voices, although the total count will vary depending on the sound generator load.

A wide range of built-in effects are included, with the SH-4d boasting nine different reverb models, five types of chorus, and five different delays, along with a selection of master EQ and compression processors.

I/O

In terms of I/O, a stereo line-level output is presented on a pair of quarter-inch TRS connectors, with a third providing a stereo headphone output. MIDI I/O is available on a pair of 5-pin DIN sockets, whilst a pair of 3.5mm mini-jack connectors offer an audio input and an input for an external clock source.

The SH-4d can be powered by a standard USB-C phone charger, and will even run on AA batteries for up to four hours. It is also capable of functioning as a USB audio and MIDI interface, and is capable of transmitting 12 channels of audio to a host computer.
