GForce unveil Oberheim DMX

Faithfully recreates iconic drum machine

GForce Software Oberheim DMX vintage analogue drum machine emulation virtual instrument plug-in

Continuing with their string of Oberheim-endorsed software instruments, GForce Software’s latest release moves away from synthesizers and instead concentrates on the company’s iconic drum machine, the DMX.

Oberheim DMX faithfully recreates the sound of the original unit, and even comes loaded with all of the onboard sounds that were included at its 1981 launch, as well as those that were introduced around 1983. There’s also a collection of content taken from the Oberheim DX, and a number of other alternative instruments that include Sequential Circuits’ DrumTraks.

The GUI mimics the layout of the hardware version, with the default view presenting eight dedicated drum channels equipped with faders, mute and solo controls and trigger buttons, as well as a master level fader. Helpfully, the interface is fully scaleable, so users can assign as much or as little screen real estate to the plug-in as they desire. Built-in delay and reverb effects can be accessed from the top of the GUI, while Filter, Distortion and Compressor sections are available to the right. An Advanced view then swaps out the faders for a collection of knobs that offer control over each channel’s send-based effects, pitch and decay parameters, pans, gain levels and so on.

As with all of GForce’s offerings, the sounds can be navigated via a comprehensive preset browser, which breaks down the factory content into a collection of categories, and of course, allows users to save and recall their own custom patches.

Oberheim DMX is supported on PCs running Windows 7 and above, and Macs running macOS 10.15 or higher. VST, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available, along with a standalone application.
