Universal Audio to launch Sound City Studios plug-in

Universal Audio have announced the upcoming launch of UAD Sound City Studios, along with the immediate release of C‑ Max Limiter. The former is a plug-in which uses UA’s Dynamic Room Modeling technology and captures the sound of the room, mics, outboard and console at the iconic California-based studio, and the latter is a dynamics processor that offers everything from transparent limiting to extreme maximising and distortion effects.

Sound City Studios

Said to be the company’s most complete studio emulation to date, the new plug-in will provide users with every aspect of the space that has played host to the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Metallica, Tom Petty, Rage Against the Machine and many more. A selection of room and microphone position combinations make it possible to place instruments within an emulation of the space, with tabs containing configurations for drums, acoustic, guitar, vocal and ensemble parts, along with reverb and re-miking options.

It’s not just the room and microphone emulations that are on offer, though. The plug-in also comes loaded with a model of the studio’s custom console, offering a three-band EQ section and in-line compression, as well as a selection of outboard processors including 1176 limiting, and the studio’s ‘secret weapon’ Dolby A-style effects. A Reverb tab also delivers the sound of Sound City Studios’ reverb chamber.

C-Max Limiter

The second new plug-in to be announced comes in the form of C-Max Limiter, a dynamics processor that has been developed by C-Suite Audio and features just three simple controls. It is said to be capable of delivering modern mixes that are competitive in terms of loudness whilst remaining transparent and free of artefacts, but also offers the option to dial in some creative distortion processing if required.

Compatibility

Sound City Studios and C-Max Limiter are supported on PCs running Windows 10 or 11, and Macs running macOS 10.15 and higher. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in formats are available. Sound City Studios will run natively with no UA hardware required, whereas C-Max Limiter is available exclusively for Apollo interfaces and UAD DSP hardware. As with all of UAD Native offerings, Sound City Studios is authorised via PACE’s iLok system via iLok Cloud or a physical dongle.

Pricing & Availability

Sound City Studios will be available by the end of November 2023, priced at $£349. C-Max Limiter is available now, and is currently (8 November 2023) being offered for an introductory price of $£174, reduced from its usual price of $£349. Prices include VAT.
