Bigger, stronger, faster
Following the release of Sonar 8 in September last year, developers Cakewalk have announced a free upgrade to the DAW software that brings a number of improvements.
Firstly, new Snap Presets can be created by the user and applied to audio and MIDI edits, making it possible to apply customised snap grids effortlessly. Also, there’s now an External Inserts facility that routes audio out of Sonar, through a hardware processor via spare outputs of the connected audio interface and back into the DAW while maintaining sample-accurate synchronisation. Cakewalk say they’ve made some performance improvements, too, with “more efficient handling of multithread processing”, which increases Sonar’s overall performance.
Alongside these code tweaks, Sonar v8.3 comes with audio content for Dimension Pro, including original samples of Roland’s SH101, TB303, TR808 and TR909, plus sounds taken from the Arp Odyssey, Minimoog and the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5. There’s also new content for Session Drummer 2 that includes samples from numerous old-school drum machines. Keep your eyes peeled for the update on the support pages of the Cakewalk web site.
