API have unveiled the ASM164, a 16-channel analog summing mixer that brings the analogue API sound into a compact and cost-effective 19-inch rackmount format. Drawing from the summing section of API’s acclaimed The Box mixing console (and read our review of its successor The Box 2 in SOS May 2020), the ASM164 is designed for professional project studios, home studios and production facilities seeking legendary analogue summing performance without a full console.
The ASM164 offers 16 balanced analogue summing channels with DB-25 connectors, powered by API’s proprietary 2510 Input OpAmps. Each channel features continuously variable panning with a center detent, 31-step detented level control, and assignable routing to two stereo program buses (Mix-A and Mix-B). For ease of use the ASM164 also includes a global 0dB bypass for channel level controls and an insert send/return on every channel for integrating outboard processing.
With the signature API 2520 OpAmps and proprietary output transformers, the ASM164 is said to deliver the warm, punchy and precise sound for which API’s consoles are known. Additional features include 4-segment LED level meters for each channel, analogue stereo output level VU meters and a balanced stereo external input assignable to Mix-A or Mix-B.
