Developed in collaboration with electronics guru Mortiz Klein, Erica Synths’ mki x es.EDU range offers a growing collection of DIY Eurorack modules designed to teach newcomers how to build their own analogue synthesizer circuits. While the last few releases have concentrated on drum-based modules, the latest addition shifts the focus to effects and throws a bucket-brigade delay into the mix.
As with all modules in the range, the EDU DIY BBD comes supplied with a detailed set of instructions that guide users through the build process, helping them to reverse engineer the architecture of a bucket-brigade delay before creating a simple version on a breadboard. As well as offering a step-by-step build guide, the instructions also explain the reasoning behind the design choices, and how they affect the sound and operation of the finished module.
The finished module sports a large Time knob that’s joined by a set of controls that govern the input gain, feedback level and dry/wet mix, as well as a toggle switch that provides short and long delay ranges. As for patchpoints, the EDU DIY BBD’s audio input is joined by mix and wet-only outputs, and also includes Time and Inhibit CV inputs. The former makes it possible to modulate the Time parameter — and is joined by a Time CV Level control — while the latter can be used to stop and start the delay effect remotely.
We spoke to Mortiz Klein and Erica Synths’ Girts Ozolins about their work on the mki x es.EDU series in the July 2022 issue of SOS, you can check out the article here.
