Slate Digital’s latest plug-in offers a meticulous recreation of the iconic tape echo unit that helped to define the sound of the dub, reggae and alt-rock records of the 70s. The machine in question is, of course, Roland’s RE-201 Space Echo, but as well as simply emulating an original unit, Stellar Echo SD-201 also introduces some new features that have been created with modern production techniques in mind.
The plug-in faithfully models the three-head behaviour of an original Space Echo, including its harmonic saturation and all of the subtle pitch and timing variations that cause the delay repeats to evolve in a distinctive way and blend naturally into a mix. There’s also a switchable Custom mode that introduces a forth modelled playhead, and provides users with full control over its output level, stereo balance and head position to cover an even wider range of tones that extend beyond the realms of the original unit.
Alongside the additional playhead, Slate Digital have introduced a number of extra features that allow users to create effects that would have been impossible with the Space Echo itself. The standard spring reverb is joined by new plate, chamber and hall modes, all of which benefit from adjustable decay times, and there’s a selection of additional parameters that include a Wow & Flutter slider, Dry Thru slider and a Clean/Noise switch. A range of modern immersive effects are on offer, too, with full stereo operation making it possible to create ping-pong delays, and an Echo Width control providing more detailed control over the effect’s stereo imaging.

Stellar Echo SD-201 is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or higher, and Macs running macOS 10.15 and above. VST2, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
