Sony to launch ECM-778 shotgun mic

New flagship mic aimed at production sound

Sony ECM-778 shotgun mic boom camera production sound recording

Sony have announced the upcoming launch of the ECM-778, a new shotgun mic that’s been designed with production sound duties in mind. Aimed at those working in TV and film, the latest addition to the company’s line-up promises to deliver high-quality audio recordings as well as benefitting from boom- and camera-mounting options.

The new mic has been built around a newly developed capsule, and employs a brass acoustic tube along with carefully designed internal electronics. Sony say that the combination offers superior performance and enables high-quality recordings that benefit from a spacious top end and stable midrange to low-frequency response. Despite its compact size (176mm), the ECM-778 is said to achieve excellent forward directivity, providing users with greater flexibility with positioning when recording in confined spaces.

Everything is housed in a durable yet lightweight (102g) machined aluminium body, and the mic can be mounted either directly to a camera or on a boom pole. Two types of windshield are provided, a foam model designed for indoor use and environments with minimal wind, and a fur-type version that offers more protection in windy outdoor conditions. There’s also a built-in high-pass filter switch to help combat wind and mechanical vibrations.

Pricing & Availability

The ECM-778 will be available in September 2025, priced at $1199.99£930 including VAT / €1100.
