Over the last couple of months, we’ve brought you the first two parts in a three-part series on guitar recording techniques from engineer/producer extraordinaire Eric Valentine. The first episode dissected the unique low-mid heavy sound of Queens Of The Stone Age’s Songs For The Deaf. In the second, Eric recreated the guitar tones from Slash’s self-titled 2010 album — using a mic robot and a Marshall stack at full bore. Now, in this final part, see how he crafts a shimmering surf guitar sound, in the vein of Smash Mouth or Third Eye Blind, that employs three amps and judicial use of modulation effects.
