Teenage Engineering unveil the OP-XY

A dynamic sequencer, synth and sampler

Teenage Engineering OP-XY

Teenage Engineering have announced the release of the OP‑XY, a sequencer, synthesizer and sampler designed for modern music creators and live performers. Built as a tribute to pragmatic German design and engineering, the OP‑XY’s streamlined interface and powerful capabilities make it a versatile tool for crafting complex music in real-time. Inspired by underground dance culture, Teenage Engineering claim this device promises a raw, hard and deliberate music-making experience.

With its 64-step sequencer and 16 programmable tracks, the OP‑XY’s workflow centres on step sequencing. Users can shape songs by stacking compositions, then twist them on the fly using a library of punch-in effects and step components. The device’s new and unique 'brain' chord progression feature enables quick access to musical ideas without breaking creative flow. An integrated gyroscope lets users control tracks by moving the device, adding a fresh dimension of performance possibilities. The OP‑XY also supports 24-voice polyphony, with scope for saving nine patterns per track and 99 scenes.

Designed in anodised matte black aluminium, the slim OP‑XY is ultra-portable yet robust, featuring a dual CPU system for fast processing and extensive performance options. It supports USB audio and MIDI and a multi‑out port lets users switch signals between four destinations, including Eurorack, synths and pedals.

Jonas Åberg: Think of OP‑XY as an ode to pragmatic German design and engineering. Its core workflow is built around complete precision, without compromising any of the musical playfulness of the device.

Available in November 2024, the OP‑XY is priced at £1899 (inc VAT).
