Fuse Audio Labs have announced the launch of VPRE-72, an emulation of the vintage V72 preamp design originally developed by North West German Radio and the Institute of Broadcast Technology, which was manufactured by a range of companies including Maihak, Siemens and Telefunken.
The plug-in faithfully emulates each element of the original hardware design, including its input and output transformers, dual EF804 pentode valve circuit and the heavy output choke which is said to add some ‘air’ to the output signal. A Drive parameter makes it possible to drive the modelled valve stage to introduce some saturation, and the plug-in will automatically adjust the output level to compensate for the increase in volume. There are also some additional control over the resulting sound thanks to built-in high- and low-pass filters derived from the later V76 design.
The company say that the plug-in will deliver the best results when used on multiple tracks in a mix at once. To assist with managing sessions that utilise more than one instance of VPE-72, they’ve implemented a handy grouping feature which makes it possible to apply parameter changes across multiple instances from one plug-in window.

Compatibility
VPRE-72 is supported on PCs running Windows 7 or higher, and Macs running macOS 10.12 and above. It is available in VST2, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in formats.
