Battery-powered PA Speakers

Spotlight Battery‑powered PA artwork header

From busking to barbecues, gigging with no mains power is now an affordable reality. We check out the current options.

There’s no shortage of portable PA gear these days, and thanks to efficient amplifiers and clever cabinet designs, even light, compact systems can pack a serious punch. However, it doesn’t matter how easy a rig is to transport if there’s nowhere to plug it in! Thankfully, there are now plenty of options available that can run entirely on batteries, offering a great solution for outdoor events or those awkward rooms where there are no spare power sockets to be found. They come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny units designed for rehearsing or providing light reinforcement to much larger boxes that can be linked together to create a serious mains‑free alternative to traditional PA systems. So, as you might have guessed,§ this month’s SOS Spotlight is focused on battery‑powered PA speakers equipped with built‑in mixing capabilities.

Alto Busker

Alto BuskerAlto BuskerAlto’s aptly named Busker houses a 6.5‑inch woofer and one‑inch tweeter with up to 200W of power in a compact and lightweight cabinet that can be transported easily, but is durable enough to stand up to some serious use. Its angled cabinet design allows it to be tilted up in both horizontal and vertical positions, and there’s a built‑in mount for attaching it to a speaker stand. For those wanting to run a stereo setup, it’s possible to link two Buskers wirelessly via Bluetooth. An integrated three‑channel mixer offers a pair of XLR/TRS combo sockets for mic and line‑level sources, with both wired and wireless aux connections provided by 3.5mm and Bluetooth connectivity; you also get a selection of built‑in Alesis reverb, delay and modulation effects, along with Mix and Record outputs (on XLR and RCA respectively) and a USB port for charging a mobile device. As well as being able to run on mains power, the Busker has an onboard battery that can offer up to 24 hours of operation thanks to a Battery Eco Mode setting.

Just as we were about to go to press, Alto announced the new TX4 Series, which includes the TX412B, a 350W 12‑inch cabinet that features a built‑in two‑channel mixer with mic, line‑level and Bluetooth connectivity.

SubZero P8, P10, P12 & L48B

SubZero MP8SubZero MP8There are seven battery‑powered systems to choose from in SubZero’s PA range. The first five form the P Series, which offer either three or four input channels and come bundled with a wireless mic — or two mics, in the case of the P12 and P15. As you might expect, the number in their name refers to the size of driver, with each subsequent model offering increased SPLs and extended low‑end response at the cost of slightly reduced battery time — the systems vary between four and six hours of use. Along with the usual mic and line‑level connectivity, the models each offer dedicated inputs for their accompanying wireless mics, as well as a Media Player section that will play back files from a USB stick or SD card, as well as supporting wireless Bluetooth streaming. The P8 then combines a three‑channel mixer with an eight‑inch driver and one‑inch tweeter, and sports a cabinet design that allows for a range of flat and titled freestanding positions as well as supporting standmounting. Finally, there’s the L48B, a compact line‑array unit that pairs an eight‑inch sub with a column of two‑inch drivers, and which will run for up to 12 hours on its internal battery. A three‑channel mixer offers two mic/line inputs and a stereo line‑level channel with 3.5mm TRS, RCA and wireless Bluetooth inputs, and a selection of four DSP modes (Flat, Music, Live and Speech) allows the system to be tailored to different use cases.
