Lewitt have built up a solid reputation with their range of microphones and audio interfaces, but their latest release sees them turn their attention to software. As its name suggests, Space Replicator comes loaded with a set of virtual acoustic spaces, and uses binaural rendering to provide headphone users with realistic-sounding room emulations.
Designed for situations where using a professionally treated room isn’t an option, the plug-in promises to offer the same experience as sitting in the actual spaces it emulates, avoiding the exaggerated stereo field that’s encountered when listening on headphones. There are built-in profiles for over 600 popular headphone and earphone models, and users are able to create their own personalised binaural profile directly within the plug-in itself — the training process takes around 10 minutes to complete.
As well as capturing a selection of high-end monitoring systems in professional studios, Space Replicator also includes a range of domestic spaces intended to serve as references for checking how a mix will translate to different systems. Emulations of Lewitt’s own studios are joined by VSL’s Synchron Stage A and B control rooms, along with White Sea Studio, a mixing and mastering studio equipped with a LennArt Audio Quasar monitoring system. Users are then able to audition their mixes on an array of different playback devices, with space emulations including a club, a car and a variety of rooms around the house. The company say that unlike many such tools, all of the ‘mix check’ options are true emulations of the space rather than simple EQ profiles.

"When LEWITT approached me to sample my studio for their plug-in, I was skeptical — as I always am. But the moment I tried Space Replicator I struggled to tell the difference between my real speakers and the simulation. That says a lot." - Wytse Gerichhausen, White Sea Studio
