Reason ReCycle returns (for Free!)

Revolutionary sampling software re-launched

Reason ReCycle sample editing software

Reason Studios have announced that their game-changing sampling software — which was originally released back in 1994 — has returned, and is being made available for free

ReCycle will be a familiar name to many, having revolutionised sample editing in the late 90s. Many of the tools we now take for granted were introduced by the software, including manipulating loops without affecting their tempo, and it paved the way for a whole host of new creative techniques as well as influencing the development of genres such as house, techno and hip-hop. The latest version arrives over 30 years after the release of the original, and thanks to support on Windows for ARM and Apple Silicon systems, the company say that it could well survive for another 30!

To find out more about audio and MIDI on Windows for ARM systems, check out our ASIO Goes Native! feature in the March 2025 issue (print / web / app / replica / PDF editions).

"When ReCycle was first released, it thrived in community-driven settings, empowering producers to share and innovate together. With this re-release and the 'ReCycle The Beat' contest, we're bringing it full circle — back to the community, where it belongs." - Calle Malmgren, CMO at Reason Studios

ReCycle The Beat

To celebrate ReCycle's comeback, Reason Studios are launching a ‘beat battle’ contest named ReCycle The Beat, where participants are being challenged to ‘flip’ a given sample using any production methods. Bonus points will be awarded to those who use ReCycle, and the winner will receive a one-year license for Reason+. The contest will be hosted by Don Cannon, the Vice President of A&R at Def Jam Recordings, who is known his work with artists such as Eminem and 50 Cent, and is responsible for signing names like Lil Uzi Vert and Jack Harlow.

Both ReCycle and the sample in question are available from the Reason Studios’ website until 16 April 2025. Winners will be announced on the 25 April 2025.

Compatibility

ReCycle is supported on PCs running Windows 10 and above, and Macs running macOS 10.15 or higher.
