Second-generation versions of two of beyerdynamic’s popular headphone models have just been announced, promising to deliver both improved audio performance and enhanced comfort. The closed-back DT 1770 PRO and open-back DT 1990 PRO have both been treated to a redesign, and now come loaded with the company’s new TESLA.45 drivers.
Manufactured at beyerdynamic’s headquarters in Heilbronn, Germany, the TESLA.45 drivers feature an advanced diaphragm design that is said to lower distortion and sharpen the unit’s response, preventing ear-fatigue during long sessions and offering clearer sound compared to its predecessor. The membrane is made of a high-performance PEEK polymer that is said to deliver deep, precise bass, while a lighter voice coil made from aluminium-coated copper wire refines the high-frequency response.
As a result, both MKII models benefit from lower THD figures and a more balanced high-frequency response than the original versions, but still maintain the company’s signature sound. With a new impedance of 30Ω, they are also compatible with a wider range of playback devices.
The DT 1770 PRO MKII feature a closed-back design aimed at recording, monitoring and editing tasks, and offer a lively sound profile with powerful, deep bass. Compared to the previous model, their frequency response is smoother in the upper mids and higher frequencies are more balanced. The DT 1990 PRO MKII have been designed with mixing, mastering and editing in mind, sporting an open-back design that creates a natural, spacious soundstage with accurate bass response. The updated design features a reduction in the high-frequency response at 8kHz, while still maintaining the detailed highs from 10kHz upwards to help prevent users from making critical mixing errors. The overall high-frequency response has also been slightly reduced compared to the previous model, providing a more balanced sound profile.
"As we continue to see the lines blur between traditional studio setups and at-home production workflows, flexibility and uncompromising audio quality have become key priorities for professionals and enthusiasts alike. The DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII exemplify this, offering cleaner sound, improved comfort and precision for every production in the ultra-premium studio headphones beyerdynamic fans already know and love.” - Andreas Rapp, CEO of beyerdynamic
The DT 1770 PRO MKII is equipped with leatherette and velour earpads, while the DT 1990 PRO MKII is supplied with two different types of velour earpads. One is a ‘Producing Velour’ that delivers a fuller, more exciting sound thanks to a slight bass boost, and the other is a ‘Mixing & Mastering Velour’ that offers a more analytical sound that’s better suited to making final mix decisions.
Both models are fitted with a flexible spring steel headband finished with a combination of memory foam and durable leatherette, and utilise a fontanelle recess designed to prevent pressure from forming at the top of the head and causing discomfort. They’re also manufactured with longevity in mind, employing fully replaceable headbands and earpads, and come supplied in a hard carry case with a 3m detachable cable and a 5m spiral cable, each equipped with lockable 3-pin mini-XLR connectors.
