Imaginando have announced the launch of their latest software instrument, and they’re kindly offering it as a free download until 1 December 2024. As its name suggests, TV3 Acid Synth offers a modern take on the TB-303, and combines the sound of Roland’s classic bass synth with an intuitive Pattern Generator feature.
The company say that TV3’s sound engine remains loyal to the sound of the TB-303, while its interface has been kitted out with a minimal set of parameters intended to make creating new sounds quick and intuitive, while still offering enough control to appeal to more experienced users. Rather than sticking to a single-oscillator design, the instrument is kitted out with Main and Sub oscillators, both of which offer a choice of square or sawtooth waves. There’s a 24dB/octave low-pass, non-self-oscillating filter with cutoff and resonance controls, an envelope section, and a distortion effect with four modes (Saturation, Saturated Wavefolding, Fuzz and Nock) and its own high-pass filter.
The headline feature of the new instrument, however, is the inclusion of a Pattern Generator section. Equipped with just a handful of parameters, the feature makes it possible to instantly generate and customise new melodies and basslines. Clicking the Generate button will, unsurprisingly, create a new pattern, which can then be adjusted using Complexity, Length, Scale and Key settings, and can be dragged and dropped onto a DAW’s MIDI track for further editing if required. Clicking on the ‘acid boy’ graphic in the GUI will then apply a random set of parameters to the synth itself, making quick work of finding new and interesting sounds.
Compatibility
TV3 Acid Synth is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or above, and Macs running macOS 11 and higher. VST, VST3 and AU plug-in versions are available.
