New looks and sounds for V-Drums
Roland’s V-Drums range of electronic drum kits is designed to give the user the sonic flexibility and quiet acoustic operation of an electronic kit, while still providing an experience close to that of playing acoustic drums. The kits employ a variety of sensor pads with drum heads made from a multi-layer mesh material which, by allowing air to pass through, make the kit extremely quiet in acoustic terms. The cymbals and hi-hat are rubber proxies for their acoustic counterparts, and are practically silent.
The Roland TD20KX kit is the new top-of-the-range model, and comes complete with a bolder style than its predecessor, furnished with space-age silver cymbal-pads and a chrome frame. If this look isn’t to your taste don’t worry, as the new kit allows drummers to change the shell wraps to create a custom style. The ‘brain’ of the kit has been upgraded, and now combines all the sounds from the TD20 and the TDW20 expansion board in one box, giving a total of 920 instruments and 100 drum kits. The TD20KX also allows adjustment of many parameters, such as shell materials and sizes, and includes a comprehensive on board mixer for blending the kit parts together. There are also new ambience and compression algorithms present, and the player can change the position of the digitally modelled microphones. The drum pads are even sensitive to the position of strikes, giving a different tone depending on where they’re hit, allowing for high levels of expression. The TD20KX kit costs £5769. Please note that the kit is called the TD20SX in the US.
