With some many instruments and effects packing in as many controls as possible, it can be quite refreshing to see someone taking the opposite approach. The latest addition to the Rob Papen plug-in line-up is an incredibly simple processor that has been designed to offer a quick and easy way to ‘thicken up’ just about any sound source. Equipped with just a handful of controls and a collection of presets, UniMagic aims to prove that plug-ins don’t need to be packed with features and functions to get great results.
The GUI is about as minimal as a plug-in can get: there’s a single Amount dial, a volume control and a ribbon-style controller strip that can be used to manipulate a predefined set of features in each preset. With the exception of a Low Cut button and a Spring Back option that allows the ribbon strip to create tempo-sync’ed effects, that’s it! As for what kind of effect the plug-in produces, the company have told users not to worry about that, and to just use it on a vocal or instrument to find out! Listening to the audio demos, however, reveals that it’s capable of a creating a range of delays, tremolos and various time-based modulation effects, and the company offer a free demo version, so there’s no harm in giving it a try…
