Blue Microphones, known primarily for mic designs such as the Reactor (http://sosm.ag/mar12-blue-reactor) and Bottle, have now turned their hands to making headphones, and they’ve approached the task rather differently than their competitors. The result, dubbed Mo-Fi, is a powered design that uses a 250 milliwatt analogue amplifier. The idea of having a built-in amplifier is to provide enough power to the 50mm drivers that they always sound their best, regardless of whether your source is studio-grade equipment, a laptop or a mobile phone. There are also three modes available when listening, giving you a degree of control over the listening experience. These are On, On+ and Off. The first simply switches the amplifier on, On+ also engages a low-frequency enhancement circuit for extra bass, then Off puts the headphones into passive mode for use with high-output studio gear.
Of course, any amplifier needs a power source of some description and the Mo-Fi headphones achieve this with a rechargeable battery built into the headphones themselves. This can be recharged by micro USB and lasts 12 to 14 hours between charges. The headphones even know when they’re not being worn and automatically switch off to save power. Even if the battery runs out, they will continue to work in passive mode.
Blue’s new headphones also look quite different to the average set of studio cans. As Mitch Witten, VP of Product at Blue explains, “We set out to completely reimagine the construction, comfort, and fit, without any preconceived notions about what headphones are ‘supposed’ to look like.” The result incorporates a multi-jointed headband that is supposed to provide greater adjustability than regular spring-loaded headbands. Part of this is a pivoting arm design along with a height-adjustment knob, that are meant to give a greater range of motion for a better fit, no matter what shape or size your head is. This, coupled with earcups that stay parallel at all times, creates the best seal for solid bass response, isolation and reduced bleed for tracking, according to the company.
The Mo-Fi headphones from Blue ($349.99) are available now at Guitar Center, Musician’s Friend, Sweetwater, and Amazon, and will be coming soon to retailers worldwide. For more information, visit www.mofiheadphones.com.
