The Stereo Asymptotic Equalizer, or Symph EQ, offers Heritage Audio’s take on the classic Baxandall EQ, and promises to deliver a natural, musical sound along with impressively low phase deviation. The company have just announced the launch of a plug-in version that brings the sound of the popular unit to DAW users, and those who already own the hardware version or an i73 PRO interface are able to download it for free.
The plug-in’s GUI replicates the front panel of the hardware Symph EQ, with a dedicated set of controls for each of the two channels separated by a selection of function switches. Both channels are equipped with high- and low-frequency bands and dedicated 12dB/octave high- and low-pass filters. There’s ±10dB of gain available for each band and the low shelf can be set to 20, 60, 110, 220, 360 or 470 Hz, with the high band offering a choice of 8, 10, 12, 15, 20 or 24 kHz.
Stereo and dual-mono modes are joined by a Mid-Side option, and in addition to using the master bypass, it’s possible to switch each channel in and out individually using BP-M and BP-S switches in the centre section. In their default state, both gain controls provide 10dB of boost in 1dB increments; up to 10dB of attenuation can be applied by engaging the channel’s Cut switch, and there’s also a +0.5dB button that, unsurprisingly, will add an additional 0.5dB to the current gain level.
Compatibility
Symph EQ is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or higher, and Macs running macOS 10.15.7 and above. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
Pricing & Availability
Symph EQ is available now, priced at $€99. Owners of the hardware version, or an i73 PRO interface, are eligible for a free license.
