Techivation’s latest plug-in has been designed to automatically apply event-based volume changes, offering an alternative way to rein in a track’s dynamics without resorting to excessive compression or writing in complex automation curves. M-Leveller analyses the incoming signal and applies gain changes to individual notes and phrases, and promises to ensure consistent levels with unmatched transparency.
Users can set a target level in M-Leveller’s GUI, while a Noise Floor parameter makes it possible to define the lowest signal level that will be targeted by the plug-in’s gain processing. A Speed setting then controls the levelling process’ response time, with higher values targeting individual notes and lower settings allowing the plug-in to adjust the level of entire musical phrases. A Mix control follows, allowing users to balance between the new, levelled signal and the original audio, and a Gain Adjustment mode setting determines whether the plug-in boosts or attenuates a signal — or uses a mixture of both — to reach the target level.
By default, M-Leveller operates based on peak signal levels, although there’s a Perceptual Filter section that makes it possible to apply filtering that more closely mimics the response of the human ear. A Peak/Filter slider makes it possible to blend between the original and filtered signals, allowing users to adjust the processing so that the results better match our perception of level changes. There’s Filter button that can be used to audition the filtered signal to help with setting the optimum filter shape. The nature of the plug-in means that it doesn’t alter the tonal balance of the audio, and so can be used ahead of a compressor to handle the bulk of the level changes and avoid heavy-handed dynamics processing.
