We can confirm that Tascam have ceased the development of their Gigastudio sample software platform. An official statement from the company states, "TEAC America, Inc. will cease further development of Gigastudio and Gigastudio related products as of July 21, 2008. Product sales and technical support will continue through the end of the year."
Gigastudio's predecessor, Gigasampler, was the first ever sample player to stream samples in real time directly from a hard drive, meaning host computers didn't need masses of RAM in order to load entire samples. This facility also allowed long samples (lasting minutes rather than seconds) to be played in full, without having to loop sections to achieve lasting sustain, as was necessary with the limitations of finite amounts of RAM.
Gigastudio followed, bringing features such as built in effects, VST plug-in support and, most recently, facilities to host virtual instruments and work on 64-bit operating systems.
The last Gigastudio product available is version 4, which was reviewed in SOS August 2008 (on-line here).
